Let’s be Blunt, There are Many Ways to Smoke Cannabis – Here Are a Few Favourites

Cannabis is a very versatile plant both in its effects and in the many ways we can ingest it, and just like there are many reasons to use cannabis, there are also many different ways to consume it.

Out of all the consumption methods, we know that smoking is the most common, but even here, there are a variety of ways to do it.

If you choose to smoke cannabis, the delivery method is often a topic that comes up for debate. This is mostly personal preference, but health benefits often factor in as well. Some smoking methods will also deliver a stronger high and be more social or less conspicuous than others.

Joints, blunts, pipes, bongs or vaporizers – each method has its own benefits and disadvantages, which can be confusing at times.

Here is an overview of the most common methods available:

The Joint

A cannabis joint (spliff, doobie, J) is a rolled-up cannabis cigarette. Joints are typically hand rolled using thin rolling papers to wrap up ground and dried cannabis flower. They are the most common smoking medium because joints are simple, (most of the time) they taste good, and they lend themselves as an accepted social activity.

Pros

  • Standard method of consumption
  • Convenient and easy
  • Choose the size of your joint
  • Portable
  • Disposable – no physical evidence after smoking, no paraphernalia
  • Taste
  • Strong high
  • Social smoking
  • Can be dropped, ripped and repaired
  • No cleaning required

Cons

  • Can affect respiratory health
  • Not pure cannabis due to rolling papers and glue
  • Strong smell while smoking and afterward on fingers & clothing
  • Require some skill in terms of rolling
  • Rolling a joint takes time (grinding up the flower, rolling)
  • Will waste some cannabis when not being inhaled
  • Cannot get wet

The Blunt

A blunt is very similar to a joint but instead of thin rolling papers, a cigar tobacco leaf is used. Blunts are very good for socializing as they can last a long time and, just like joints, deliver a strong high. On the flip side, they can be harsh to smoke, have a very strong smell and will inevitably include tobacco as an ingredient.

Pros

  • Convenient and easy
  • Choose the size of your blunt
  • Portable
  • Disposable – no physical evidence after smoking, no paraphernalia
  • Taste
  • Strong high
  • Social smoking – able to last longer than a comparably sized joint
  • Bit of a novelty smoke
  • Can be dropped, ripped and repaired
  • No cleaning required

Cons

  • Can affect respiratory health – includes tobacco and delivers a harsher smoke than joints
  • Added cost – requires a cigar or blunt paper to roll one up
  • Strong smell while smoking and afterward on fingers & clothing
  • Requires some skill in terms of rolling
  • Rolling a blunt takes time (grinding up the flower, rolling)
  • Will waste some cannabis when not being inhaled
  • Cannot get wet

The Pipe

Pipes come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, and materials – from small to large and from metal to wood to glass. They are great for a quick hit anytime, delivering a strong high when you need it without the hassle of rolling a joint.

Pros

  • Quickest and easiest way to smoke
  • Choose your bowl/hit size
  • On-the-go smoke/portable
  • less residual odour on hands and clothing
  • No waste
  • Discreet
  • Each pipe is a piece of art/collectible
  • Easy to clean
  • Great taste
  • Strong hits

Cons

  • Smell while smoking
  • A dirty pipe smells
  • Can deliver a harsher hit
  • Can heat up and cause burns if users aren’t careful
  • Users may get ash in mouth near the end of a bowl
  • Paraphernalia
  • Requires cleaning
  • Can be broken if dropped or neglected
  • Purchase price
  • Will not work if broken

The Bong

A bong is a type of water pipe where users light their cannabis in a bowl and then draw the smoke through a water-filled chamber and into their lungs. Bongs offer a great way to filter tar and combusted substances out of the smoke, making hits taste cleaner and better. Not very portable, but a nice way to smoke without wasting any cannabis, they come in many shapes and sizes and are often works-of-art.

Pros

  • Art pieces, collectible
  • Accessories and modifications available
  • Smoother smoke
  • Cleaner smoke for your respiratory system
  • Large hits
  • Strong, immediate high
  • No wasted cannabis
  • No contaminants (papers, glues, tobacco)
  • Very little smell on fingers or clothing

Cons

  • Not as sociable as joints or blunts
  • Not easily portable
  • Requires cleaning
  • Smelly if dirty
  • Can be harsh to smoke
  • Expensive to purchase
  • Paraphernalia
  • Will not work if broken

The Vaporizer

Vaporizers or vapes are a relatively new way to smoke dried cannabis flower. A vaporizer works by heating cannabis to the point where all the good stuff (THC, CBD, other cannabinoids and terpenes) are released in a vapour to be inhaled.  Due to the cannabis never reaching combustion temperatures, no smoke is created, and users can achieve all the benefits of smoking cannabis without the respiratory side effects.

Pros

  • Healthiest way of smoking cannabis – minimal side effects on the respiratory system
  • Amazing taste due to lack of combustion
  • No wasted cannabis
  • Strong & clear headed high
  • Less smell while smoking, much less residual odour on hands and clothing
  • Collectable vapes
  • Portable
  • Discreet

Cons

  • Expensive to purchase
  • May involve a learning curve and can be finicky to use
  • Requires frequent cleaning and maintenance
  • Reliant on batteries or electricity
  • Will not work if broken

So, there you have it – a list of the most common cannabis smoking methods and the pros and cons of each. With so many ways to smoke it, the method you choose may change according to the day or the situation. And, as always, the higher quality cannabis you have the better the experience should be.
