Who Needs Sleep? Turns Out, Everyone

There are few things in this world that can repair and replenish our bodies more than a good night’s sleep. The restorative effects of getting some much-needed shuteye are reflected in our ability to concentrate, our wherewithal to rejuvenate, and our capacity to heal.

But the difference between getting some quality rest and dealing with insomnia can be as simple as how you go about sleeping. The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) in the U.S. thankfully has some tips to optimize your nightly visit with the Sandman.

Time Is On My Side, Yes It Is

First up is having a regular bedtime and wake up time. If you’re a parent you know all about how having set times for sleep are important for your child’s well-being, so why not for you?

The NSF says that having a regular sleep schedule regulates your body’s internal clock, which can assist in falling asleep and staying in dreamland for the whole night.

Relax With a Bedtime Ritual

A nightly routine, which needs to happen away from bright lights, can help lull the body into that sweet unconsciousness. This specific practice helps separate sleep time from the various decisions and activities one does in a day.

The routine can be reading a book, meditating, or anything else that one may need to get to that soothing siesta.

Nap No More

The NSF states that if you have trouble falling asleep at night, a nap is not for you.

Many people resort to power naps during the day for an extra boost of energy to make it through. But if your power nap gives you too much pep-in-your-step, it can affect your ability to fall asleep at night.

It may be difficult, but eliminating that nap in the day can help.

Hit The Gym

No matter who you are, exercise is a known activity to help with getting a better night’s rest.

It’s important to exercise daily, but you don’t need to be Rocky Balboa preparing for the big fight, even light exercise, like walking, will help do the trick.

Nesting = Resting

If your room is filled with distractions and other accouterment that can disrupt your snooze ability, do something about it.

The NSF says that rooms should feel cool and free from any noise disruptions. As well, it may be beneficial to invest in things like blackout curtains, white noise machines, or humidifiers to create that optimal sleep situation.

Regardless of how you do it, getting a good night’s rest is the goal. If you are able to achieve that goal on a nightly basis, it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to realize that you’ll have a better life.
